Laura McHugh Soprano

COLORATURA SOPRANO & ACTOR

Laura McHugh, a “jaw-droppingly talented” (The Boston Globe)  soprano “ready for heavenly ascent” (Boston Musical Intelligencer), is lauded for her “superb, floating” sound (Melrose Free Press), "brilliant upper register and compelling dramatic interpretation" (BARTV Boston), and gift for "hilarious interpretation" (Voce di Meche). A 1st Place winner of both the Classical Singer National Competition and the Vermont Vocal Competition, she is known for her versatility across opera, concert, and muscial theater, with a particular flair for contemporary and comedic work. She has been praised as a performer who "steals every scene she's in" (Theater Mirror) who can "nearly take the roof off" (Joyce's Choices).

Recent higlights include multiple World Premieres, including Yury Yanowsky's contemporary ballet Subject 41 with Lam Dance Works, in which she appeared as the featured vocalist. She will reprise the work at Tanglewood this winter. She is also featured on the upcoming recording releases of Menotti's The Last Savage in the role of the Concert Singer, and Chadwick's The Padrone (both through BMOP/sound). Her voice appears on nearly a dozen commercial recordings, including the GRAMMY®-nominated The Lord of Cries (Pentatone), a nominee for Best Opera Recording.

Musical theater credits include Florinda in Into the Woods with Tulsa Opera, Beggar Woman in Sweeney Todd with Opera51, and Mrs. Fezziwig in A Christmas Carol with Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, a role she will reprise for a third season this winter. Her performance in the role was hailed as “an absolute delight” (Medium) and “worth the price of admission alone” (The Boston Globe).
